FAREWELL TO THE LATE BRUCE FRANZEN, Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Board Member

Bruce Franzen August 9, 1950 – October 15, 2014
I received a text message on Sunday, October 19, 2014 advising that Bruce Franzen had passed away. I first met Bruce in 1972. Over time, we lost contact, and then reconnected in 1991. We were friends ever since. Bruce was an "older brother" to me, helping me move once and he must have thought he was constantly rescuing me from bad relationships.
Bruce was past president of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, and together with his wife Jackie, the two have been organizers and volunteers on the roots music scene for many years.
Bruce's eyes would light up when Jackie's name was mentioned, and he was the love of her life.
Bruce was especially active with an annual event where he played a key role, the Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival. It’s a landmark event held every May at the old western-town movie set at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a site administered by the National Park Service. The couple’s other involvements include the acoustic music series held at the Airtel Hotel, along with a variety of folk, bluegrass and western music events.
The Topanga Banjo•Fiddle website still includes his autobiographical paragraph as a board member: "Hello, my name is Bruce Franzen and I'm a native Californian, born in the San Fernando Valley. I attended my first Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest in 1967 and after that I was hooked. Soon I began playing mandolin at the Blue Ridge Pickin' Parlor and then at Topanga itself in 1983. I am now serving on the Board of Directors of the contest. Currently I'm employed by the City of Los Angeles and since 1989 have volunteered for the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. I am a past president of that organization. I look forward to helping to make this year's Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest the most enjoyable ever. See you there!"
Those who saw Bruce at Topanga over those many years will carry fond memories of interactions with him.
I spoke to Bruce’s wife, now widow, Jackie, just after his passing. Jackie told me that she and Bruce had been together over 26 years. They were married for more than fourteen of those years.
In addition, Jackie shared, "Bruce and I were co-Presidents of the Jaycees at the same time. Bruce was also very active in elections and worked our precinct for a number of years. We did everything together. I love him so much."
Bruce had a very diverse working career. Initially, he was a plumber by trade. Bruce also worked for the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks Department for two years before he went to work for the LAPD Motor Transport Division.
About 18 months ago, Bruce told me his kidneys were failing. He came to my office and spoke to the attorney I where I worked at that time; the attorney had undergone a kidney transplant several years ago. The attorney, Mr. Gold, spoke to Bruce for almost two hours, explaining the pros and cons of dialysis, and suggested he look for a kidney donor.
Bruce was on dialysis several times a week, and last week, he succumbed to septicemia.
Bruce leaves behind his lovely wife, Jackie, their cat, and numerous relatives and friends, including his many music friends. All of whom will miss him.

JIM CURRY PERFORMS JOHN DENVER’S MUSIC WITH SYMPHONY, & MORE
If you’re of the right age, perhaps you remember listening to the radio in the summer of 1975 when John Denver sang, "Thank God I'm a Country Boy." At the very end of the song, after the last fiddle break, John Denver shouted, " John Sommers played the fiddle, and he wrote that song!"
“Thank God I'm a Country Boy” became a #1 hit song for 22 weeks, and was recorded on the popular live album, “An Evening With John Denver,” that went several times platinum. It was also recorded on another album, “Back Home Again,” but fans preferred the live version so that is what the radio played. For 22 weeks, the #1 chart-topping hit featured John Denver hollering out John Sommers name.
A songwriter couldn't ask for better recognition than that, but John Sommers takes it all in humble stride and says with a grin, "That song has been very good to me." Since then, “Thank God I'm a Country Boy” has been recorded by many artists, in many different languages around the world. It has also been the traditional "7th inning stretch" song of the Baltimore Orioles since 1975 - and any attempt to introduce a new song has been met with strong resistance from the fans.
This weekend, John Sommers joins Jim Curry and the band to pay tribute to the music of John Denver, and the show will include John Sommers once again performing his own hit song. The very talented John Sommers has still got it, and with Jim Curry doing guitar and lead vocals, the fun and inspiration of John Denver music comes alive once more.
Getting John Sommers to join him has taken Jim years. Much longer than it took to reunite other members of Denver’s original band, or even to get the original orchestra sheet music for each player from an all but forgotten vault. How do you follow all that? With two symphony shows.
After playing some school fundraisers together, Jim, John and the band will get on an airplane for two shows with the Charlotte Symphony in North Carolina, on Friday, Nov 7 and Saturday Nov 8th.
Jim says, “Symphony shows are always so amazing because you hear the powerful sound of an entire symphony added to the already powerful words and music of John Denver. We are so excited because this is the first time John Sommers has joined us for a symphony show and we know he will have as much fun as we have performing with an orchestra.”

This Saturday at The Mint, here in Los Angeles, a Benefit for Breast Cancer show brings a reunion of musicians after 25 years, and features a host of amazing players for the all-star jam after the show.

“SAMHAIN! A CELTIC HALLOWEEN” – IS “THE STORY OF HALLOWEEN & CELTIC TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL”

There are huge T-Rex and Triceratops fossil digs where young paleontologists can uncover long-hidden dinosaur bones. PHIL WARD, who has played Disneyland many times, is lighthearted. ERIC SCHWARTZ, the guy with a gazillion You-Tube views, is bawdy at times. And listen closely to CHAUNCEY BOWERS, the full-fledged science professor who manages to sing very well for a guy with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek.

JOHN ZIPPERER's CD is currently #1 on the Roots Music Report, and "Sailing Away" is #2 in California. THE JOHN ZIPPERER TRIO is the Julie's Joint house band condensation of John Zipperer & Friends, and features Barrett Tagliarino & Jime Van Booven. "Eek at the Greek is definitely for families with small children. It seems geared toward the area schools. The symphony sounded great, the hanging chandeliers set the stage, and it was fun to see the musicians in costumes. I loved all the pieces selected and the readings by Stacy Keach and Melissa Chalsma. I did expect lots of screaming babies and restless toddlers, which is fine, but the adults seemed to think the music was a backdrop for conversing. I'm glad the kids get exposure to classical music but wish the adults would respect the performance more."

"Another great show. This was [the] third year of the performance and my third year attending. As word spreads on this event there are more and more kids, which is a good thing but also a bad thing as they were pretty loud for the first song or two. It is a great family event, although I don't have kids. Trying to mix it up this year they had three new pieces, I was only a fan of one of the three, that being 'Ritual Fire Dance, ' but I wasn't a huge fan of the story (although my friend was) and I don't know the music of 'Wicked' to appreciate it. Also in the spirit of mixing it up on 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' they started with verses by Goethe which were a nice addition. Intermission was, again, a costume contest, and while the host (some reporter from ABC) was funny, it was the weakest of the contests thus far. The second half opened with the 'Funeral March of the Marionette' with them bringing in kids to conduct. The start, again this year, was Stacy Keach reading Edgar Alan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart." This either ties or surpasses the first year's reading. They closed again with 'The Devil's Dance' which was my favorite song of the night. I did wish they played more of the classics - 'Danse Macabre, ' 'Toccata & Fugue, ' or 'Night on Bald Mountain, ' but nevertheless it was a great show."

Note that "Eek at the Greek" is a Nederlander event. Nederlander is in a fierce competition against Ticketmaster for a new 20-year contract to operate the Greek. Though no one else is saying it, we want to advise you that this could be the final year for this event.

The three lead singers, NICOLA GORDON (fiddle & ukelele); SUSAN MARIE REEVES (guitar, strumstick & ukelele) and REBECCA TROON (banjo, fiddle, bodhran & tin whistle) are all accomplished songwriters. LISA MACKER plays standup bass & mandolin while joining in on vocals & harmonies. Right out of high school at the age of 16, GUITAR SHORTY joined RAY CHARLES and his band for a year. At the age of 17 he recorded a single under the direction of WILLIE DIXON on the Cobra label. When Shorty was lured away to play with GUITAR SLIM he moved to New Orleans. In New Orleans, Shorty fronted his own group that became the house band at the legendary Dew Drop Inn. There he played with greats such as T BONE WALKER, BIG JOE TURNER, and LITTLE RICHARD. It took a job with SAM COOKE to get 19-year-old Shorty on the bus and on his way to the West Coast. When Shorty married Marcia he also got JIMI HENDRIX, Marcia's brother for a brother-in-law. The young Jimi Hendrix came to see Shorty play often, and they were friends until Jimi's untimely death.

Like a Texas tumbleweed, Shorty rolled back to the Los Angeles area in 1971 and Los Angeles has remained his home. He cut his first full album and got his first “W.C. Handy Award” while living here.

Using the two-handed integrated percussive acoustic technique he pioneered in the 1980’s, Reed fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion that integrate the breathtaking potential of the guitar body. Preston Reed doesn’t need a band. He is the band.

The decades since, have seen Reed touring globally. In 2012, the guitarist was an irresistible force, spellbinding the UK and Europe on the 50-date Guitar Masters Tour alongside Andy McKee. He sold out – twice – in Singapore, charmed Irish audiences, and dropped jaws in countries as far-flung as Croatia. That year, as a popular draw on the corporate circuit, Reed’s unique skills saw him requested by global brands including Nike USA, Revolution Growth and the Dubai-based GAC Corporation – while a set at the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh has since clocked over a million views. 2013 saw him perform in China, Mexico, South Africa, France, the UK, and Poland.

SONGS & STORIES is a show that blends the acoustic folk and roots music that helped shape the music of the 60s with anecdotes about how the songs and musical styles of the past have evolved into what many today call Americana.

JERRY BURGAN is a musician, singer, songwriter, folk historian, and author who first became known as a member of WE FIVE, the Grammy-nominated ’60s folk-rock group he co-founded with the late MICHAEL STEWART. The group's hit recording of You Were On My Mind set a standard for vocal innovation and was #4 on Billboard's Top 100 songs of 1965 -- behind "Satisfaction." Burgan has led WE FIVE since 1968, and is the common thread appearing on all seven of their albums. He still finds time for occasional WE FIVE performances with his wife (and lead singer), DEBBIE BURGAN, but he also appears regularly in “SONGS & STORIES.” His first solo CD, “Jerry Burgan: Reflections, Songs & Stories,” released by Global Recording Artists, is based on material from the “Songs & Stories” show. Many of the stories told in this show can be found in Burgan's book, “WOUNDS TO BIND: A Memoir of the Folk-Rock Revolution.” This is a fine opportunity to hear original music at Swedenborg Hall, a venue with excellent acoustics.
