FAREWELL TO THE LATE BRUCE FRANZEN, Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Board Member

By Michele Marotta, Guide correspondent

Bruce Franzen August 9, 1950 – October 15, 2014

I received a text message on Sunday, October 19, 2014 advising that Bruce Franzen had passed away. I first met Bruce in 1972. Over time, we lost contact, and then reconnected in 1991. We were friends ever since. Bruce was an "older brother" to me, helping me move once and he must have thought he was constantly rescuing me from bad relationships.

Bruce was past president of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, and together with his wife Jackie, the two have been organizers and volunteers on the roots music scene for many years.

Bruce's eyes would light up when Jackie's name was mentioned, and he was the love of her life.

Bruce was especially active with an annual event where he played a key role, the Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival. It’s a landmark event held every May at the old western-town movie set at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a site administered by the National Park Service. The couple’s other involvements include the acoustic music series held at the Airtel Hotel, along with a variety of folk, bluegrass and western music events.

The Topanga Banjo•Fiddle website still includes his autobiographical paragraph as a board member: "Hello, my name is Bruce Franzen and I'm a native Californian, born in the San Fernando Valley. I attended my first Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest in 1967 and after that I was hooked. Soon I began playing mandolin at the Blue Ridge Pickin' Parlor and then at Topanga itself in 1983. I am now serving on the Board of Directors of the contest. Currently I'm employed by the City of Los Angeles and since 1989 have volunteered for the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. I am a past president of that organization. I look forward to helping to make this year's Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest the most enjoyable ever. See you there!"

Those who saw Bruce at Topanga over those many years will carry fond memories of interactions with him.

I spoke to Bruce’s wife, now widow, Jackie, just after his passing. Jackie told me that she and Bruce had been together over 26 years. They were married for more than fourteen of those years.

In addition, Jackie shared, "Bruce and I were co-Presidents of the Jaycees at the same time. Bruce was also very active in elections and worked our precinct for a number of years. We did everything together. I love him so much."

Bruce had a very diverse working career. Initially, he was a plumber by trade. Bruce also worked for the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks Department for two years before he went to work for the LAPD Motor Transport Division.

About 18 months ago, Bruce told me his kidneys were failing. He came to my office and spoke to the attorney I where I worked at that time; the attorney had undergone a kidney transplant several years ago. The attorney, Mr. Gold, spoke to Bruce for almost two hours, explaining the pros and cons of dialysis, and suggested he look for a kidney donor.

Bruce was on dialysis several times a week, and last week, he succumbed to septicemia.

Bruce leaves behind his lovely wife, Jackie, their cat, and numerous relatives and friends, including his many music friends. All of whom will miss him.

If you have a story to share about Bruce, email Joy Felt (bgraskal1@earthlink.net) and she will incorporate it into Bruce’s special memory book for Jackie.

Services are Saturday, November 1, at 10 am in the chapel at Oakwood Memorial Park, 22601 Lassen St, Chatsworth, CA 91311; 818-341-0344.

Joy Felt will host a musical celebration for “A Life Well Lived” following the ceremony. Jackie has requested that you bring your instruments to celebrate Bruce’s love of music.

“The poetry, the paintings and the music, they're all merely drawn from the well of mankind and so must be returned to him so that he may drink and in drinking come to know himself.” – Fredrico Garcia Lorca.

JIM CURRY PERFORMS JOHN DENVER’S MUSIC WITH SYMPHONY, & MORE

If you’re of the right age, perhaps you remember listening to the radio in the summer of 1975 when John Denver sang, "Thank God I'm a Country Boy." At the very end of the song, after the last fiddle break, John Denver shouted, " John Sommers played the fiddle, and he wrote that song!"

“Thank God I'm a Country Boy” became a #1 hit song for 22 weeks, and was recorded on the popular live album, “An Evening With John Denver,” that went several times platinum. It was also recorded on another album, “Back Home Again,” but fans preferred the live version so that is what the radio played. For 22 weeks, the #1 chart-topping hit featured John Denver hollering out John Sommers name.

A songwriter couldn't ask for better recognition than that, but John Sommers takes it all in humble stride and says with a grin, "That song has been very good to me." Since then, “Thank God I'm a Country Boy” has been recorded by many artists, in many different languages around the world. It has also been the traditional "7th inning stretch" song of the Baltimore Orioles since 1975 - and any attempt to introduce a new song has been met with strong resistance from the fans.

This weekend, John Sommers joins Jim Curry and the band to pay tribute to the music of John Denver, and the show will include John Sommers once again performing his own hit song. The very talented John Sommers has still got it, and with Jim Curry doing guitar and lead vocals, the fun and inspiration of John Denver music comes alive once more.

Getting John Sommers to join him has taken Jim years. Much longer than it took to reunite other members of Denver’s original band, or even to get the original orchestra sheet music for each player from an all but forgotten vault. How do you follow all that? With two symphony shows.

After playing some school fundraisers together, Jim, John and the band will get on an airplane for two shows with the Charlotte Symphony in North Carolina, on Friday, Nov 7 and Saturday Nov 8th.

Jim says, “Symphony shows are always so amazing because you hear the powerful sound of an entire symphony added to the already powerful words and music of John Denver. We are so excited because this is the first time John Sommers has joined us for a symphony show and we know he will have as much fun as we have performing with an orchestra.”

Jim Curry is on the road a lot. Fortunately for Southern Californians, he and his wife Anne live here so we get opportunities to see them perform in small venues as a duo, and occasionally in larger venues with members of John Denver’s original band. Keep up with them at

This Saturday at The Mint, here in Los Angeles, a Benefit for Breast Cancer show brings a reunion of musicians after 25 years, and features a host of amazing players for the all-star jam after the show.

JANET ROBIN, a stellar guitarist, tells us, “We are also going to be joined by MICKY DOLENZ, singer and drummer from THE MONKEES. I grew up watching that show and singing all their songs. And now, PRECIOUS METAL will be backing him up as he sings a couple of great Monkee songs as a special guest during our set. I'm looking forward to re-living my childhood.”

Janet explains, “The benefit has turned out to be a great success with a totally sold out show at The Mint, amazing auction items like a pink JJ French Epiphone Les Paul, a Daisy Rock Rock Candy Guitar, special items donated by Rick Springfield, The Monkees, and more. All proceeds are going to Chemowize to help the fight against breast cancer, which several of my friends are fighting right now, including our bass player from Precious Metal. If you'd like to find out more about my old band from the ’80s, please visit http://www.preciousmetal-allgirlband.com/

“After this show, I will be back to my own solo work as I prepare for my next cd to be released 2016. I'll have some shows on occasion but mostly focusing on writing and recording at the moment.

“I will be participating in Neil Young tribute show happening in Santa Barbara in November, and I'm looking forward to that as well as the All Star Guitar Night at The Marriott during NAMM here in Anaheim, CA.

“Until then, ROCK ON and see you out and about!”

Janet Robin will play the “NEIL YOUNG TRIBUTE SHOW” on Tuesday, November 25th at SOHO in Santa Barbara. Don’t dawdle getting tickets.

“SAMHAIN! A CELTIC HALLOWEEN” – IS “THE STORY OF HALLOWEEN & CELTIC TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL”

The Guide looks forward to this one every year. And on Sunday, November 2nd, you’ll get two chances to enjoy it, at 3 & 7 pm, with both shows in the SFV (North Hollywood).

They’ve played a lot with the title this year, and no wonder, because this is a very full show of Irish music and dance, together with storytelling and performed scenes. Producer Aedan MacDonnell, who also performs, tells us, “The Dead Do Tell Tales, told through song, story, music and dance.” It’s produced through her company, Celtic Rhythms, at the Mayflower Club, 11110 Victory Bl, N Hollywood 91606.

Samhain: (pronounced sow-in, like the pig) is a Celtic Halloween extravaganza. You'll hear tales of the true origins of the Jack O' the Lantern, of ghostly encounters, and the origins of All Hallows' Eve, told with high energy Irish dances, traditional Celtic tunes that will bewitch your feet and keep your toes a-tappin', ghostly love songs that will rip your heart out, and exciting dances with real swords and axe handles with the dancers in very close proximity to one another. The promo asserts, “You won't want it to end!” That’s true. It’s that good.

Aedan says, “This year we have a new line-up in outstanding musicians, as well as those that have been with the show from year one. And we also have an official Samhain song, written by Padraic Conroy, one of our new additions. He wrote two songs for the show, one is previewed on our website.”

You can enjoy that one at http://celtic-rhythms.com/samhain

The Guide heartily endorses this show, which has become an annual tradition on the Southern Cal arts scene. We recommend you get tix right away, as it will likely sell-out. And we recommend you opt for the “Preferred” seats, because the venue has a flat floor.

Sat, Oct 25, in Griffith Park:
7 pm Annual "EEK AT THE GREEK" featuring Hollywood star guests and SYMPHONY IN THE GLEN, at the Greek Theatre.
+
This has become a landmark event. Here are a few comments gleaned from reviews by past reviews:
+
"Eek! At the Greek, Symphony in the Glen [presents] a family friendly event with an edge, thanks to an impressively scary reading of 'The Tell-Tale Heart' by Stacy Keach over original music by conductor Arthur Rubinstein. The all ages costume competition added some fun and originality. A really great musical selection in a majestic setting elevated a chilly night."
+
"Eek at the Greek is definitely for families with small children. It seems geared toward the area schools. The symphony sounded great, the hanging chandeliers set the stage, and it was fun to see the musicians in costumes. I loved all the pieces selected and the readings by Stacy Keach and Melissa Chalsma. I did expect lots of screaming babies and restless toddlers, which is fine, but the adults seemed to think the music was a backdrop for conversing. I'm glad the kids get exposure to classical music but wish the adults would respect the performance more."
+
"Another great show. This was [the] third year of the performance and my third year attending. As word spreads on this event there are more and more kids, which is a good thing but also a bad thing as they were pretty loud for the first song or two. It is a great family event, although I don't have kids. Trying to mix it up this year they had three new pieces, I was only a fan of one of the three, that being 'Ritual Fire Dance, ' but I wasn't a huge fan of the story (although my friend was) and I don't know the music of 'Wicked' to appreciate it. Also in the spirit of mixing it up on 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' they started with verses by Goethe which were a nice addition. Intermission was, again, a costume contest, and while the host (some reporter from ABC) was funny, it was the weakest of the contests thus far. The second half opened with the 'Funeral March of the Marionette' with them bringing in kids to conduct. The start, again this year, was Stacy Keach reading Edgar Alan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart." This either ties or surpasses the first year's reading. They closed again with 'The Devil's Dance' which was my favorite song of the night. I did wish they played more of the classics - 'Danse Macabre, ' 'Toccata & Fugue, ' or 'Night on Bald Mountain, ' but nevertheless it was a great show."
+
Note that "Eek at the Greek" is a Nederlander event. Nederlander is in a fierce competition against Ticketmaster for a new 20-year contract to operate the Greek. Though no one else is saying it, we want to advise you that this could be the final year for this event.

A Tall Men show is rich with brotherly rapport, crafted harmonies, stories and musicianship. But that's only the icing. The cake is the songwriting. Accessible, fresh, original, often funny, always moving. Audiences from Oregon to San Diego rave that "every song is a gem". The overwhelming success of their West coast tour prompted the band to release their first album, “12 by 6;” in 2013, which is available on CD baby, iTunes and at their live shows. It’s also the birthday celebration for the group’s founder, Jimmy “Muffin” Yessian. More at http://tallmengroup.weebly.com

RUTH ALPERT is the band’s dancing percussionist, an Appalachian-style flat-footer, who seems to float as she makes it easy for the crowd to dance and clap along. The Possums intention is “to create and share bliss through music”. Their collective joy onstage is delightful, & their performances are carried on a strong current of love and friendship. “Possum” audience members often comment on how that energy is positively contagious. "The Possums have hearts full of honey. These women clearly love what they're playing. This is true Americana... and they're mighty tight as well. If you could taste the sound, it would be clear country Honeydew Vinewater. Give them a listen! " -- Johnny Sacko / Santa Barbara, possum friend.

TOM PRASADA-RAO is a musician's musician -- an unassuming presence on the folk scene since the early nineties. His voice belies his musicianship and his extraordinary songs. From Rishi’s Garden with it’s homage to Ravi Shankar to the groove of Sleeping Beauty, Tom’s music is melodic, ambitious, and reverent. He's starting to tour again after being featured last year on the nationally syndicated TV show, “Troubadour Texas.”
+
From headlining major festivals 15 years ago, to the relative obscurity of a recording studio - Tom continued to mature as an artist. That work blossomed into an impressive resume of producing credits as well as cuts (his songs covered by other artists). This year (2014) marks Tom’s departure from his adopted life and his return to the road.

At the heart of the band's sound are the twin engines of Ryan McKasson's dynamic, Scottish-based fiddling and the understated-but-monster picking of mandolinist Ashley Broder. Jeff Spero provides wonderfully inventive and surprising piano accompaniment, anchored by the driving power of Christa Burch's non-traditional bodhrán. Right out of high school at the age of 16, GUITAR SHORTY joined RAY CHARLES and his band for a year. At the age of 17 he recorded a single under the direction of WILLIE DIXON on the Cobra label. When Shorty was lured away to play with GUITAR SLIM he moved to New Orleans. In New Orleans, Shorty fronted his own group that became the house band at the legendary Dew Drop Inn. There he played with greats such as T BONE WALKER, BIG JOE TURNER, and LITTLE RICHARD. It took a job with SAM COOKE to get 19-year-old Shorty on the bus and on his way to the West Coast. When Shorty married Marcia he also got JIMI HENDRIX, Marcia's brother for a brother-in-law. The young Jimi Hendrix came to see Shorty play often, and they were friends until Jimi's untimely death.

Like a Texas tumbleweed, Shorty rolled back to the Los Angeles area in 1971 and Los Angeles has remained his home. He cut his first full album and got his first “W.C. Handy Award” while living here.

“Widely thought of as the world’s most gifted guitarist” -- Total Guitar

“In a class of his own” -- London Evening Standard
“A major musical talent” -- Manchester Evening News
+
PRESTON REED....
“Question: when is an acoustic guitar not an acoustic guitar?
Answer: when it’s in the hands of New York visionary Preston Reed.” -- Total Guitar
+
Percussive fingerstyle master Preston Reed, who inspired such latter day flattop heroes as Andy McKee and Kaki King, arrives tonight at Boulevard as part of his U.S.A. tour of his mind blowing new album.
+
Using the two-handed integrated percussive acoustic technique he pioneered in the 1980’s, Reed fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion that integrate the breathtaking potential of the guitar body. Preston Reed doesn’t need a band. He is the band.
+
Twenty-seven years after his idiosyncratic style was born, Reed’s seismic global impact has created a sea of guitarists playing in his style. Today at the height of his game, Reed's recordings and live performances still define the sound of the pioneering compositional guitar genre he invented over a quarter century ago.
+
The decades since, have seen Reed touring globally. In 2012, the guitarist was an irresistible force, spellbinding the UK and Europe on the 50-date Guitar Masters Tour alongside Andy McKee. He sold out – twice – in Singapore, charmed Irish audiences, and dropped jaws in countries as far-flung as Croatia. That year, as a popular draw on the corporate circuit, Reed’s unique skills saw him requested by global brands including Nike USA, Revolution Growth and the Dubai-based GAC Corporation – while a set at the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh has since clocked over a million views. 2013 saw him perform in China, Mexico, South Africa, France, the UK, and Poland.
+
Preston's live shows are full of contrasts, by turns explosive and sweetly lyrical. He riffs with the conviction and guts of a rock band, yet plays with the subtlety of the most delicate of jazz pianists. There are no fancy gadgets or gimmicky FX - just 6 strings (or occasionally 12), two hands and a daring and innovative musical imagination that crosses all boundaries.
+
With a career spanning over four decades, this trailblazer still tours and records with a passion that flows into the hearts, heads and feet of his audience.

SONGS & STORIES is a show that blends the acoustic folk and roots music that helped shape the music of the 60s with anecdotes about how the songs and musical styles of the past have evolved into what many today call Americana.
+
JERRY BURGAN is a musician, singer, songwriter, folk historian, and author who first became known as a member of WE FIVE, the Grammy-nominated ’60s folk-rock group he co-founded with the late MICHAEL STEWART. The group's hit recording of You Were On My Mind set a standard for vocal innovation and was #4 on Billboard's Top 100 songs of 1965 -- behind "Satisfaction." Burgan has led WE FIVE since 1968, and is the common thread appearing on all seven of their albums. He still finds time for occasional WE FIVE performances with his wife (and lead singer), DEBBIE BURGAN, but he also appears regularly in “SONGS & STORIES.” His first solo CD, “Jerry Burgan: Reflections, Songs & Stories,” released by Global Recording Artists, is based on material from the “Songs & Stories” show. Many of the stories told in this show can be found in Burgan's book, “WOUNDS TO BIND: A Memoir of the Folk-Rock Revolution.” This is a fine opportunity to hear original music at Swedenborg Hall, a venue with excellent acoustics.

7 pm THE DUO TONES plus PAUL JOHNSON & FRIENDS play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Surf guitar legend PAUL JOHNSON is well-known at the Coffee Gallery Backstage for his many appearances here as one-half of the DUO-TONES, the popular two-guitar unit that specializes in surf-style rock instrumentals (a la “Pipeline,” “Apache,” “Baja,” etc.) Lately, Paul has been busy assembling a new four-piece band dedicated to the same genre of music, and he has chosen to stage the DEBUT PERFORMANCE of his new band, PAUL JOHNSON AND FRIENDS, at the CGB.

"Paul Johnson is widely acknowledged as second only in importance to Dick Dale as a 'founding father' of surf music in the early '60s." — Nervous Records Shop, www.nervous.co.uk
+
"… one of the recognized founders of surf music’s colorful heritage… Paul began developing what was to become surf music as early as 1959." — jimfacey.com
+
“The Belairs were the original surf crucible... there at the birth of surf. Paul Johnson defined (surf music’s) well crafted and balanced two-guitar structure, and wrote some of the most enduring instro tunes...” — Phil Dirt, reverbcentral.com
+
"Johnson's distinctive style became known as the "South Bay sound, " spawning and inspiring many other bands including The Beach Boys." — www.surfhistory.com
+
"Had Paul Johnson’s career ended after the Belairs’ 1961 recording of ‘Mr. Moto, ’ his importance in the history of rock and roll instrumental music would be insured; with his latest musical chapter he stands as possibly the most important figure in this select but vital genre..." — Dan Forte, assoc. editor, Guitar Player magazine.
+
“...Paul Johnson, more than any other artist, has succeeded in bringing surf music into the present without sacrificing its past.” — Vintage Guitar magazine.
+
"(Paul) continues to push the envelope of rock instrumental more successfully than any other artist." — Cosmic Debris.
+
"Johnson’s compositions embody the prime ingredients that distinguish instrumental surf music—short, tight songs with active rhythm that underpins the bold, slightly distorted guitar tone which is the music’s focal point... (Johnson’s) experiments are worth keeping an eye on." — C.P. Smith, OC Register.
+
"...a remarkably articulate player. His music covers a wide spectrum of popular music categories, including blues, country, rock and surf, which he plays with great technical ability... in his genre, he has to be one of the best I’ve heard." Mike Varney, "Spotlight" editor, Guitar Player magazine.
+
"...a truly unique and authentic musical talent... his sound is as recognizably his own as that of Knoefler or Clapton. (Johnson’s) easy control, bright inflections, and flowing compositions make for uplifting listening..." — Brian Quincy Newcomb, CCM magazine.
+
"Paul Johnson has become somewhat of a guru to the surf revival cult centered around bands such as the Mermen, Los Straitjackets, and Laika & the Cosmonauts." -- Dan Forte, Vintage Guitar magazine.
+
"Paul Johnson is, according to many critics... quite simply the greatest surf guitarist alive." — Toe’s Tavern (Redondo Beach surfer’s bar).
+
Paul has hand-picked some of the top players from within the surf-instro genre to work with him at this endeavor of love: accompanying him on the CBG stage for their first public performance will be: Ron Eglit (guitar and bass) — bassist for Dick Dale for 20 years; then more recently, guitarist for the Surfaris (“Wipe Out”) for another decade.
+
Matt Quilter (guitar and bass) — veteran guitarist for the past twenty years with the innovative instro band the Reventlos.
+
Duff Paulson (drums) — veteran drummer for the past twenty years with the classic traditional-style instro band the Torquays.
+
As Ron & Matt are both adept at playing both the guitar and the bass, the plan here is to have them trade off between the two instruments, thus lending greater variety to guitar sounds within the band. The group’s repertoire will include all the surf and rock-instrumental classics, as well as Paul’s own catalog of original tunes. The goal for Paul Johnson & Friends is to move the genre forward with new ideas for the music, while remaining faithful to the original style that defines the surf-instrumental genre -- that style which, after all, Paul had helped to define in the first place.

+
JACQUIE MANNING and RICH PREZIOSO of the Chicago-based SMALL POTATOES say it has taken them years of careful indecision to develop a repertoire they describe as “Celtic to Cowboy.” Superb musicianship and showmanship, award-winning songwriting, and a strong sense of tradition has made them, as Dirty Linen Magazine once said, “one of the most polished, inventive, and entertaining shows on the circuit.”
