♪  Acoustic Benefit for Paraquat Kelley is Dec 14

The “Mighty Met Acoustic Flashback Benefit for Paraquat Kelley” brings many music stars on Sunday, December 14, to the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills.
+
Featured artists – all performing acoustically – include George Thorogood, Janiva Magness, Prescott Niles, Dan Navarro, Michael-Ann Azoulai, Kiki Ebsen, Paul Barrere (Little Feat), Bill Champlin (Chicago), Waddy Wachtel, Christina LaRocca, Julian Shah-Tayler, Riley Biederer, Peter Stroud, Lantz Lazwell, and more. Do you remember KMET, that uniquely wild and wonderful L.A. radio station that was quite simply the greatest radio station in the world in its time? (And may still be the greatest that ever was?) Well Whoo-ya to ya!
+
PATRICK “PARAQUAT” KELLEY was a pivotal person in rock history, and key figure in the craziness, good times, and socially and politically influential content that accompanied great music, live performance-interviews, pyrotechnic ambush explosions in the studio. He wrote and delivered the weekly “Fish Report with a Beat” and “Dirk Canyon, M.D” (the satire of every soap opera that ever was, and the place that introduced the legendary “Doctor Leon” – abba-loot-lee), and so much more. Now, Paraquat is suffering from MS, a severe debilitating disease, and he and his wife need our help to defray his huge medical expenses. So former KMET air staffers JIM LADD, CYNTHIA FOX, and JEFF GONZER are joining lots of musicians in a big benefit for their friend and former colleague. If you remember that wonderfully wacky counter-culture that was KMET, here’s your chance to re-live it for a night and do some good for one who brought us all so much unique and memorable entertainment during a previous era of dark political times.
+
A silent auction is part of the event. Among the donated items is an autographed personal guitar donated by Richie Sambora.
+
100% of the proceeds from this event, the silent auction, and ancillary funds raised will go directly to Pat's medical bills. For Pat and his wife Melody, these are  a “tsunami of medical expenses” related to Pat's ongoing battle with MS.

+
The event is at 7:30 pm at the Canyon Club in Agoura. Tix now available at the venue and at Ticketmaster; prices range from $29 to $58. C’mon folks: it’s a one-time ACOUSTIC show with real stars, and a BENEFIT.

Akira Kurosawa's “Red Beard” 50th-anniversary screening is Wed, Jan 14, at 7 pm in USC’s “Visions & Voices” series, in the Ray Stark Family Theatre, School of Cinematic Arts 108, on the USC Campus in University Park (L.A.) Admission is free and open to everyone, but reservations are required and it will fill-up. Reserve your seat online beginning Tue, Dec 9, at 9 am, at www. visionsandvoices.usc.edu
+
“Red Beard” is set in a public hospital serving the indigent in rural, feudal Japan. The 1965 film asks profound humanist and existential questions relating to social injustice. Is there a way out of the dispiriting cycle in which victims express their pain by hurting others? How can we break cycles of suffering and violence? “Red Beard” is the last black-and-white film by Kurosawa, and the last Kurosawa film starring legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune.
+
The screening is presented in conjunction with a live stage performance the following night by Los Angeles Poverty Department (“LAPD”), the renowned theatre troupe made up of homeless and formerly homeless artists, with the theatre company celebrating its own 30th anniversary. The actors present their acclaimed work “RED BEARD,” also free, but requiring a reservation. This is quite special, with a classic film and live theatre together over two nights.

The other half of USC’s “RED BEARD / RED BEARD” presentation:

The “RED BEARD” theatrical performance by the Los Angeles Poverty Department acting troupe, directed by John Malpede (without the film), is Thu, Jan 15, at 7 pm in the McClintock Theatre on the USC Campus in University Park (Los Angeles). Admission is free and open to everyone, but, like the above event, reservations are required and it will fill-up. Reserve your seat online beginning Tue, Dec 9, at 9 am, at www. visionsandvoices.usc.edu

Renowned theatre troupe Los Angeles Poverty Department (“LAPD”), celebrating the 30th anniversary of their founding, is the first theatre company in the United States composed of homeless and formerly homeless artists. “LAPD” connects the experiences of people living in poverty to the social forces that shape their lives. “Red Beard/Red Beard” is a poetic and powerful work that challenges viewers to reflect on possibilities for breaking cycles of poverty.

Straight No Chaser: "The Happy Hour Tour," plays the Fred Kavli Theatre-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts, in Thousand Oaks, Mon, Dec 29, 8 pm.
+
If the phrase "male a cappella group" conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses ... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. They're performing on the heels of the release of Under The Influence, their fourth album release through Atlantic Records. The album features contributions from superstars Jason Mraz, Rob Thomas, Phil Collins, Dolly Parton and more! Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense ... and with a sense of humor. On the road, Straight No Chaser has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act.

Tim O’Brien, Pete Wernick, Nick Forster, & Charles Sawtelle first appeared together as the band Hot Rize way back in 1978. The band went their separate ways in 1990, but not before becoming the International Bluegrass Association’s first-ever “Entertainers of the Year,” being nominated for the then-new Bluegrass GRAMMY, receiving a four-star review in Rolling Stone and touring across four continents.
+
Each member went on to have distinguished careers of their own but the band refused to disappear. Rare reunion shows like the one in1996, captured for the acclaimed “So Long of a Journey” CD (released in 2002), kept the flame burning.

When Sawtelle passed away in 1999, the surviving members brought guitarist Bryan Sutton on board and carried on with the occasional appearances. The Wall Street Journal calls it “classic.”

For Caponigro, Ireland and Britain became sites of creative energy to which he returned repeatedly.
